Lately I've noticed that some of my games have light scratches on them specifically my 'Batman: Arkham Asylum' disk. So recently I've been playing it and whenever the full CGI cutscenes start I hear see one measly skip and then less than a second later the 'disk read error' pops up. Its like it didn't even try to read the disk after it skipped just once. At first I'm like ok because you see the setup for these cutscenes in-game and you can pretty much assume what happens even if you skip them. Then, later on in the game I'm walking through intensive treatment for the second time and at a certain point I hear Batman start coughing *obviously cueing another encounter with Scarecrow* and the game freezes. Now I can't even get past that point so I can't beat the game. I also get the same disk read error on Gears of War 2 (during online game as well which resulted in me getting a negative review on my other xbox live account) and it has less scratches than Batman. All this for a few light scratches?
I remember my PS2 boldly going on and on while viciously reading even medium to slightly deep scratches to the point where you could hear loud whirring (to me it always said "I'm working as hard as I can Captain!" - in a scottish accent). The 360 is supposed to be next generation and its doing worse than the PS2 which is almost a decade old!
Don't tell me Micro$oft gives me another reason to hate them even more by making the 360s have weak lenses or lasers so once your disks get even a little bit scratched you have to buy a new one?!?!?! I should've gotten the big beast that is the PS3, atleast that has its great predecessor backing it (that is also still the #1 console, beating the 360 and PS3).
Actually, they're doing what most technology companies do now of days. TVs used to last 40+ years. Now? You're lucky to pass 5 or 10. It's more a matter of price/speed vs building to last. It almost (questionable) makes sense when you think about how quickly technology progresses.
Though I do feel for you...it should at least last long enough to make it to the next console release. If not longer.
Suggestion though, make use of the game install ability on xbox 360. It'll make it so that your disk doesn't have to constantly read...it'll just check to ensure it's there and the right game.
My 360 has worked like a charm since the day I brought it home. Though I have to admit I take such care with my gaming systems and games it borders on absured
When I bought mine, it worked well. After a month the console just started acting strangely. DoA disk was clean but half of the time I got disk read errors. got few RRoD and whatnot. Called wal-mart, could exchange it. Called microsoft, had to pay to get it repaired (or replaced). So I just sold it 650$ with 12 games, 2 controllers and the 360 premium... I don't regret it, except that I'd like to try GoW2 one day idk never tried the franchise.
Needless to day, he console was in perfect condition. the only times i moved it was when I had to clean my place over and remove the dust on/around it.
Yeah I'm wondering where these light scratches are coming from especially since most of my games I've only had a few weeks. I never move my 360 when its on though.
yeah bad idea moving while game is in and its on GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
anyway
Where do you people get your 360s? mine did work for the year it came out till this year (its video thing gave out) now i got an elite whichstill refuses to scratch my discs it loves my discs = D
I'm surprised some people that have launch 360s don't have problems, I guess you were the lucky ones cause I'd say a little over a third of the 360s that came out at launch were defective because M$ rushed to beat Sony. In the end they had to do a huge recall.
I've never had issues with disc scratching (I guess I should say "yet"). I think that must be incredibly frustrating since it is your game system ruining some other product you purchased.
But as for the general grumping about MS and all of the 360s problems, I guess I find it difficult to get that upset about it. I bought my first 360 about a year and a half ago, it red ringed this past summer and I replaced it. I was sad to lose the 360, but wasn't all that surprised - and not because of the hardware issues with the 360. It's a $250-$300 piece of hardware and I used it A LOT and it died after about 13-14 months. Not a bad return on my investment, to be honest. Do we really expect these systems to last forever with such heavy use?
(And, yes, I know there are 360s that red ring right out of the box. I'm not saying MS doesn't have problems, I'm just saying that a percentage of the MS bashing is not entirely justified)
Big problem is Microsoft to cut cost will never have to identical xbox's so it's impossible to tell which one's will bugger every thing and which ones will play nice (least at first). My xbox elite doesn't seem to cause my game disc issues. If it does it's under warranty for another year :) and I'll happily ship it back to get a new one.
They actually fail on both fronts. Looking at Microsoft's history its no wonder they suck at making things because they never made anything in the first place! Bill Gates lied, cheated, stole, and bought his way to the top. Microsoft didn't even make the original DOS.
I had Disc Read Errors on my original Xbox and get them on my 360 as well. Seems to be something with Microsoft as they can't make a console that can read a disc. Pathetic.
